TV MOUNTING FIREPLACE

Flat screen televisions have become very popular lately. With the change to digital signals it just makes sense to upgrade to an LCD, plasma or LED tv. For many rooms the best place to mount the new tv is over the fireplace. Mounting your tv above your fireplace does entail some unique challenges though. Is there brick above your fireplace? If it is drywall, what is the condition of the structure behind the drywall. Maybe you have some nice wood detail. The amount of time you use your fireplace is also a concern. Have you ever put your hand right above the mantle when you have a fire going? It can get very hot!

Lets look at the brick option first. This is most likely the most difficult situation for tv mounting on a fireplace. Screwing your tv bracket to brick requires some special fasteners. You can go to your local hardware store find some good fasteners. More than likely you are not hanging a 50 inch flat screen up there anyways, so the weight of your tv shouldn't be to great. Just keep in mind that a 42 inch HDTV weight more than double a 26 inch screen. The weight is proportional to the area of the screen and not its diagonal measure.

NEVER buy a floor model!!! The store has set up the colors and contrast for the best possible picture. This can damage a flat screen in the long run!

Attaching the tv above the fireplace where drywall is the backing is the most simple. You just want to be sure to hit a stud with your screws. When attaching a tv mounting bracket to a wood detail, it would be best to try and hit a stud as well. Though this is not as critical as with drywall and of course the wood is stronger. It does depend on the size of television you are mounting above your fireplace.

Some final thoughts have to do with the heat from the fireplace and the hiding of the cables running to the back of the tv. This will be one of the main focal points of the room and you want it to look spectacular! If you are like me who runs my fireplace twice a year, then heat is not an issue. If you run your fireplace four times a week, then you may want to consider another place to mount your tv. You will most likely also want a slight tilt to your tv as it is above your eye level. There are many fine tv mounting brackets which will meet this criteria.

I hope you found this article helpful in tv mounting above your fireplace. As always, have a blessed day!
